Starting as a teenage beginner

You do not need prior martial arts experience. Expect a warm-up, foundational skills and feedback that helps you develop at your own pace. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Uniforms are not required for all classes, and training is usually barefoot. Any equipment needed will be provided to beginners.

Your class and your registration form

Ages 12–14 can explore Youth & Cadet within its existing age range. Ages 15–17 may train in the ages 15+ Taekwondo class alongside adults. TNT is not advertising a dedicated teen-only class.

Everyone under 18 must use the youth registration workflow, including those attending the ages 15+ class. A parent or guardian must complete the appropriate consent requirements. The registration actions below follow this rule.

Recreation, competition and leadership

Train recreationally without pressure to compete. Ask instructors about current competition preparation, skill progression and possible leadership opportunities as you gain experience. Competition and leadership opportunities depend on readiness and current programming.

Find Your Place at TNT

Whether you’re trying martial arts for the first time, exploring adaptive training, working toward your next belt, or preparing to compete, there’s a place for you at True North Taekwondo. Build your skills, challenge yourself, and pursue your goals with a supportive community.

Land acknowledgement

True North Taekwondo acknowledges that we gather, train, and serve our community on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. We recognize the Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, Dakota, Lakota, Nakota, and Métis peoples whose relationships with these lands span generations.

For us, a land acknowledgement is more than a statement about where we train. It is a reminder of how we want to live and serve together. The tenets of Taekwondo—courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit—help guide that responsibility. Courtesy calls us to listen and treat others with respect. Integrity asks us to be honest about our shared history and accountable for our actions. Perseverance reminds us that reconciliation and relationship-building require ongoing effort. Self-control calls us to act thoughtfully and with humility. Indomitable spirit encourages us to stand against exclusion and work toward a community in which everyone has the opportunity to belong.

Guided by the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action 87–91 on Sport and Reconciliation, we are committed to listening, learning, building respectful relationships, reducing barriers to participation, and creating a Taekwondo community in which Indigenous participants and families are welcomed, respected, and able to participate fully.
